Quick hit to Catalonia By George Ullrich

Just returned from a quick hit to Catalonia to kick start on fitness for the coming year of trad. Good job since the weather is now starting to improve! Rach and I flew out to Barcelona and picked up a nippy little car, zipped straight to the supermarket to stock up on chorizo and cous cous. We then headed straight on to Siurana where we met up with 'shakey' Jake and 'mad for it' Alex. Had a nice couple of days climbing there then moved onto the new pastures of Margalef after feeling the need explore different crags in the area. I've been to Catalonia 6 or 7 times and somehow I've always ended up in Siurana. Margelef was a nice change of scene. We were met there by Steve Ramsden from France and John Freeman from Kendal. I managed to flash an impressive looking 7c+ 'Maligna. I also ticked off 'Gravity Globe', an 8a next to it.

After lots more escalading and feeling the strain of the intense pocket pulling, we moved on to Terradets for some more endurance tufa type climbing. Definitely suiting my style more. My highlights being, on sighting an 8a and the getting an 8a+ in the bag on first red point.

Overall a very enjoyable trip with great company! Now it's time to get stuck into some dirty trad climbing in preparation for a trip up to do the Long Hope route with Alex in May! A little bit of exciting news - a trip to go and explore and climb on a French Polynesia island called Ua Pu near Tahiti, which American Kinloch Earle has invited me on, has just been confirmed! We will be going out there for the first two weeks of April.
The next adventure - the amazing island of Ua Pu, French Polynesia
